A Tennessee Wedding Photographer’s Favorite Fall Engagement Photoshoot Locations

If you’re picturing fall engagement photos with a cozy, nostalgic, curl up with your lover kind of vibe, Tennessee is the perfect backdrop. Fall in Tennessee is something else; the Smoky Mountains turn into something you have to see to believe. The light is soft and golden, temperatures settle into sweater weather, the trees turn shades of red and orange you’ve never seen, and the ridgeline lives in my dreams at night. It’s why I loooooove living in Tennessee.

But you didn’t come here for a love letter to Tennessee. You came here for the good stuff… where to actually take your fall engagement photos that’s going to give you that classic fall feeling.

This blog post is a running list of the locations I come back to year after year as a Tennessee wedding photographer. The ones I know, shoot at, and would send my own best friend to if she got engaged tomorrow. I’m walking you through my favorite spots, the vibes of each one, who it’s perfect for, and what you need to know before you show up. I’m also sharing my best tips for preparing for your engagement session, so you’re not Googling “what do couples wear for pictures” at 11 PM the night before.

When is The Best Time for Peak Fall Foliage in Tennessee

The fall color in Tennessee moves from the mountaintops down to the valleys over several weeks, which gives us a surprisingly reliable window to plan around instead of guessing and hoping for the best.

Higher elevations like Newfound Gap start changing as early as mid-September, while the rest of us are still clinging to the last sliver of summer. Each week from there, the color creeps lower and lower into the valley, until it peaks across most of East Tennessee during the third week of October. Lower elevations, including Cades Cove, hold onto their color a little longer and stay into early November, so there’s still hope if you’re a procrastinator!

If you want the short answer, schedule your photos for the second and third week of October for the highest chance of color with minimal bare branches. We’re going for cozy fall romance, not a sad November walk.

Best Fall Engagement Photo Locations in Tennessee

Ozone Falls

Ozone Falls is where you go if you want some drama. About forty minutes outside Knoxville, the 110-foot waterfall drops into a deep, blue pool below, surrounded by a natural amphitheater carved out by years of wind and rain. It has that wild, tucked-away feeling that makes your photos look like you wandered into some secret corner of Tennessee instead of pulling off near I-40.

In the fall, this place gets even better. The trees above the gorge start changing color, so you get all that warm Tennessee fall foliage mixed with cool blue water, mossy rocks, and deep shadows around the waterfall. It photographs beautifully because there is so much contrast here. Soft leaves, rugged stone, moving water, golden light. It’s moody in the best way.

This spot is for the couple who want their engagement photos to feel like an adventure. It does take a little hiking and some scrambling to get down to the best areas, but that’s part of what makes it feel so special. Ozone Falls is not the easiest location on this list, but it gives you photos that feel different from anything you’d get in a field, studio, downtown, or on a manicured trail. It feels wild, romantic, and a little more unexpected, which is perfect for the right couple.

Location: U.S. Highway 70, Crab Orchard

Overall Vibe: Dramatic, wild, rugged, secluded

Things to Know: The trail down to the base is steep and rocky, and there aren’t any railings, so sturdy shoes are non-negotiable here. Parking is limited and fills up fast on weekends, so we’ll want to plan around timing to get a good spot and avoid a crowd in your photos.

Maple Grove Estate

If you love the idea of dressing up a little, wandering around a historic estate, and having photos that feel both elegant and relaxed, Maple Grove Estate is probably going to be your favorite location on this list. Tucked away on over 15 secluded acres in West Knoxville, this historic estate has that classic Southern charm. It has a tree-lined drive, manicured lawns, brick pathways, and a grand home that looks like it belongs on the cover of Home and Gardens.

In the fall, the entire property takes on a warm, golden glow that makes it feel even more like a storybook, especially during golden hour. The old trees lining the drive turn shades of amber and rust, but the estate itself keeps everything feeling grounded and elegant.

This location is especially great for couples who don’t want to hike or climb anywhere. We can use the front of the estate for that classic, editorial look, move along the brick paths for something more romantic, or use the lawn for a relaxed and casual look.

Location: 8800 Westland Dr. in Knoxville

Overall Vibe: Elegant, romantic, timeless

Things to Know: Maple Grove Estate is a private event venue, so we’ll want to confirm permission, availability, and any portrait session rules ahead of time. Since it’s also a wedding venue, weekday sessions or non-event days will usually give us the most flexibility.

Knoxville Botanical Garden

If you want a spot that feels romantic without needing a car ride into the mountains, the Knoxville Botanical Garden is exactly that. Just minutes from downtown, this 44-acre garden is full of stone walls, winding trails, and hidden little corners that make you forget you’re still inside the city. Between the Secret Garden, the peony collection, and those old Cedars of Lebanon towering overhead, there’s a new backdrop practically every ten steps.

In the fall, the garden slows down and softens up. The crowds thin out, the light gets that warm late-day glow, and there are still pops of color tucked throughout the grounds even as everything starts easing into autumn. On a clear day, you can catch glimpses of the Smokies from parts of the property, which makes for one of my favorite kinds of shots: mountains in the distance, the two of you up close.

This spot is for the couple who want easy, laid-back energy. No hiking boots required, no long drive, just walking trails, mountain views, blooming gardens, and stunning scenery. It feels less like a photoshoot and more like a date night with a weird third wheel.

Want to see a real engagement session here? Check out this blog!

Location: 2743 Wimpole Ave. Knoxville

Overall Vibe: Romantic, lush, whimsical, easygoing

Things to Know: The garden requires a photography pass for any session, so I’ll handle getting that squared away ahead of time. It’s open to the public daily, so weekday mornings or early evenings tend to give us a quieter garden and better light than a busy weekend afternoon.

Newfound Gap

If you want mountains, actual mountains, stretching out behind you in every photo, Newfound Gap is your spot. Sitting at 5,046 feet along the Tennessee and North Carolina border, this is the lowest drivable pass through the Smokies, and the views from the overlook are the kind that make you stop mid-sentence.

This is one of the most iconic views in the entire national park, and it earns that reputation. In the fall, the color comes in waves depending on elevation, so this high up, the leaves start turning earlier than almost anywhere else in East Tennessee. Golden light, endless mountains, and a little bit of crisp mountain air. It’s the kind of backdrop that does most of the work for us.

This is a great location if you want your engagement photos to feel scenic and elevated, but still simple to access. We can use the overlook for the big mountain views, then move around nearby for softer moments with trees, stone, and that dreamy fall light. It’s one of those spots where you don’t need a complicated plan. You just need the right time of day, a little patience with crowds, and a photographer who knows how to work around the overlook chaos. Hi, that’s me!!

Location: Newfound Gap Road, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Overall Vibe: Cinematic, adventurous, dramatic, majestic, scenic

Things to Know: This is one of the most visited overlooks in the entire park during fall, so weekday mornings or evenings right before sunset give us the best shot at a quieter moment. It’s also a bit of a drive from Knoxville and sits at a higher elevation, so it runs noticeably colder up there than it does in town, so it’s worth layering up for.

Cades Cove

Cades Cove makes me feel like I’ve stepped backwards in time. This 11-mile loop through the Smokies is dotted with historic cabins, old churches, wide open fields, and mountains rising up on every side. It’s one of the most iconic spots in the park, and once you’re inside the cove, it’s easy to see why.

In the fall, Cades Cove has this warm, nostalgic feeling that is hard to beat. Because it sits at a lower elevation than some of the mountain overlooks, the color usually hangs around a little longer here, which makes it a great option later in the season. You get golden fields, changing trees, mountain views, and that soft fall light that makes everything feel calmer and more romantic.

This location is perfect for couples who want their engagement photos to feel scenic and deeply connected to East Tennessee. It’s less about one dramatic backdrop and more about the whole feeling of the place. The quiet roads, old cabins, open valley, and mountain views all work together to create photos that feel timeless without feeling too formal. Basically, if you want your session to feel like a slow fall evening in the Smokies, Cades Cove gets it.

Location: Cades Cove Loop Road, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Overall Vibe: Nostalgic, peaceful, rustic, charming

Things to Know: Cades Cove is inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, so you’ll need a valid parking tag if we’re parking for the session. It also gets really busy in the fall and on weekends, so a weekday or early morning session will have fewer crowds.

What Fall Engagement Photos Location is Right for You

If you’re torn between locations, start with the feeling you want your photos to have. Every fall engagement location in Tennessee has its own personality, and the best choice usually comes down to what feels most like the two of you. The right location will make your photos feel more personal, more connected to your story, and more like a reflection of who you are as a couple.

Choose Ozone Falls if you love an adventure, don’t mind a hike, and want something dramatic without driving deep into the mountains. This is a great fit if you want your session to feel moodier, wilder, more adventurous, and less expected.

Choose Maple Grove Estate if you want timeless architecture, beautiful gardens, and an engagement session that feels like a classic love story. This is perfect if you don’t want to hike but still want to take full advantage of the beautiful Tennessee fall.

Choose Knoxville Botanical Garden if you want something peaceful, easy to access, naturally beautiful, and full of variety. It’s also a great option if you feel awkward in front of the camera because the gardens give us plenty of natural ways to move, interact, and settle in.

Choose Newfound Gap if mountain views matter most. This location gives you that big Smoky Mountain feeling, especially in the fall when the colors are showing off. Just know it can be crowded, windy, and unpredictable, so flexibility is key.

Choose Cades Cove if you want your session to feel nostalgic, rustic, cozy, and deeply Tennessee. Think old cabins, open fields, winding roads, and mountains in the distance.

What to Expect During a Fall Engagement Photo Session with a Photographer

Now we’re getting to the fun part!! Booking your session starts on my website, where you’ll fill out the inquiry form and tell me a little about you two and what you’re dreaming of for your photos. From there, I’ll reach out, and we’ll decide on your date and location and talk through any special details to make your session feel like you.

Once your day arrives and we’re actually shooting, I like to keep things fun and relaxed. There will be no stuff and awkward posing here! My biggest goal isn’t getting you to smile at the camera every thirty seconds. It’s creating enough space for you two to actually settle in together. I’ll guide you the whole time, but I’m never trying to make you perform. If I’m quiet for a minute, that’s usually because you’re already doing exactly what I’d tell you to do.

Most sessions run about an hour to an hour and a half, which gives us time to explore a few spots and squeeze in an outfit change if you want one. During fall engagement photos, I love getting a little variety so your gallery feels full without the whole thing feeling rushed.

More than anything, I want your session to feel easy and fun. You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. That’s my job! You just get to love on each other, laugh through the weird parts, and trust that I’ll guide you the whole way.

What to Wear for Outdoor Fall Engagement Photos in Tennessee

I’m going to be a little dramatic here and claim that fall gives us the best color palette to work with all year. There’s so much warmth and color, and it makes outfit planning a breeze. I recommend leaning into neutrals and earthy tones or deeper jewel tones. Think cream, camel, rust, olive, navy, burgundy, chocolate brown. These colors blend beautifully with fall in Tennessee without competing with the scenery.

Layering is your best friend for fall photos. A flannel, light sweater, denim jacket, or cardigan can add texture to your outfit and give you something to take off if the weather warms up. Tennessee fall can be a little dramatic, so having options is never a bad idea.

When you’re planning outfits with your partner, coordinate instead of matching. Similar tones and a shared color palette will photograph much better than identical outfits. You want to look like a couple, not siblings ready for family photos.

Last thing, we’re not running a cute outfit with ugly shoes. With that being said, several of these locations involve uneven ground, grass, or loose rock, so leave the heels at home unless you’re bringing backup shoes. Boots or comfortable flats are the best move here.

How to Choose The Best Time of Day for Fall Engagement Photos in Tennessee

The best time of day for fall engagement photos is golden hour, which is the dreamy window of golden light, right before sunset. It’s the key to that classic warm and cozy fall engagement photo vibe that’s all over your inspo board. It’s the kind of light that’s flattering even for the people who swear they’re not photogenic.

The main thing to remember is that sunset happens earlier in the fall, so your session may need to start earlier than you expect. Depending on the month and location, we may be starting in the late afternoon or mid-evening to make sure we catch the best light before it disappears. Fall light is beautiful, but she does not wait around for us.

Guess what, though! You don’t need to figure all of that out on your own. Once we choose your date and location, I’ll help you pick the best start time based on sunset, location, time of year, the scenery, and how much walking we’ll need to do. My goal is to make sure we have enough time to get comfortable, explore the location, get a lot of variety, and most importantly, get photos the two of you will love.
