This engagement photoshoot at Maple Grove Estate with Malia and Austin had me thinking about it for weeks afterwards. The light was soft, and the trees were glowing; it had that golden hour warmth that everyone adores.
It felt relaxed, no stiff posing. Just a slow evening walk around the property, following the light from one spot to the next.
The grounds gave us everything we needed. Open space, textured backgrounds, a historic building with character, and tall trees casting the perfect shadows, and enough variety throughout the property that every part of the session felt a little different, without us needing to rush. Their dog tagged along for the evening, which added to how good this whole session felt.
Engagement photoshoots like this are exactly why I love photographing couples. Malia and Austin are getting married here this September, and I cannot wait to be back at this venue.
There’s a reason Maple Grove Estate is raved about, and it goes so much deeper than just being pretty.

I’ve photographed a lot of venues as a Knoxville wedding photographer, and Maple Grove Estate is one I’ll recommend over and over again.
This venue photographs SO well without feeling overdone or trendy, which I personally love. There are open green spaces, tree-lined areas, soft rolling hills, unique, southern-inspired architecture, and plenty of room to move through the property without ever feeling like you’re running out of options. And the best part? You don’t have to force anything here. The property already has so much texture and character built into it.
Maple Grove Estate’s gorgeous Georgian and Federal-style architecture provides a backdrop that makes a simple portrait feel refined without trying too hard. Even the tucked-away corners of the property have so much texture and depth to them. It has an older and more established feel that photographs beautifully in every season.
This is one of the biggest reasons I love sessions here. We can move around the property without the gallery feeling repetitive or like we’re trying too hard to make one spot work.
In a single session, we can move from the trees and soft grass to the brick courtyard or columns at the front of the house, and each location feels different. The light is unique in each spot, which means your gallery ends up feeling really full and layered instead of 100 versions of the same photo.
If you’re getting married at Maple Grove Estate and you haven’t decided where to have your engagement photoshoot, I want to gently encourage you to consider your wedding venue. Some venues are amazing for weddings, but don’t give you much to work with for engagement photos. Maple Grove Estate does both.

I will forever encourage couples to bring their dog to their engagement session because that so-called “chaos” usually makes the photos better. Malia and Austin’s dog brought a playful energy to the session, which was so helpful in making them feel more relaxed. It’s really hard to feel awkward in front of a camera when your dog is actively trying to eat grass, tackle you, or ignore every command you’ve ever taught them.
To make your session as enjoyable as possible, I do encourage you to prepare a few things before your photoshoot.
A good walk or game of fetch is always a good idea. A tired dog is a more cooperative dog, and although we don’t need them to hold perfectly still, a pre-session energy burn goes a long way towards keeping things moving smoothly
Treats are going to be your best friend! It’s one of my go-to tools for getting a dog to look in the right direction at the right moment. Bring what they go crazy for, even if it’s weird, like slices of cheese or pretzel sticks. Whatever works! I’m not above making weird noises or bribing your dog for the shot. We do what we need to do here.
You’re not going to want your pup in every single photo, and that’s completely fine. Having a trusted person there to hold their leash or take them on a walk between frames means you’re not splitting your focus between managing your dog and being present with your partner.
The crazy moments are often the best ones. Those usually end up being everyone’s favorite photos anyway. The unexpected zoomies, the face lick at exactly the wrong section, the stubborn refusal to sit despite months of obedience training, are all real life, and it makes for genuine photos.
Maple Grove Estate’s open grounds give dogs plenty of room to move and run, and it’s honestly one of the best setups for a session like this that I’ve found in Knoxville.

So many engagement photos and wedding portraits are taken at golden hour for a reason. The lighting is softer and more flattering, and brings out so much dimension and interest in the scenery.
There’s a reason photographers are all obsessed with golden hour, and Maple Grove Estate during sunset is kind of ridiculous. Compared to the harsh midday sun that creates deep shadows and squinting, golden hour wraps around people and scenery in a way you can’t replicate at any other time of day.
Golden hour at Maple Grove Estate brings light through the treeline that filters across the grounds in tones of orange and amber. The brick on the house picks it up, and the grass looks almost luminous. It’s the kind of light that makes me sit down to edit and go “okayyyy excellenttttt” because it already did half my job for me.
Timing your session to end right around sunset means you get the full arc of that light as it shifts. You’ll start with soft, diffused light that’s warm and easy to work in, move into peak golden hour when everything takes on that rich amber glow, and finish with a softer, more blue-toned light that shows up in those last quiet minutes before dark. The variety you get within a single session is hard to beat.
And trust me, this is why I help all my couples with timing instead of just throwing a random start time on the calendar. Want to think through the full planning process for your session? I broke everything down in this guide: How to Plan the Perfect Engagement Session.

I know engagement sessions can sometimes feel like the “extra” thing people aren’t sure they need, but they make SUCH a difference.
Your wedding day is going to move fast. Like… REALLY fast. Even with the best, most relaxed timeline, it’s a full, emotionally layered day, and photos are just one piece of a very full day. The couples who feel the most comfortable and relaxed during wedding portraits are almost always the ones who have already spent time in front of my camera before.
An engagement session is where we figure out how you move together naturally, what kind of direction helps you feel the most comfortable, and how to get the genuine interaction from you that makes pictures feel genuine and not like staged photos of you two standing next to each other. Nobody magically knows what to do in front of a camera right away, and I think people forget that sometimes. Your engagement session is where we can practice so your wedding day can just feel good.
For Malia and Austin specifically, I love that we got to walk this property together before their wedding day. They already know how the light falls across the property in the evening. They know which spots feel most like them. When I see them on their wedding day, we’ll be picking up a dynamic we already established, not starting from scratch while also managing a full wedding timeline.

Golden hour, which falls in the hour or so before sunset, is hands-down the most beautiful light at Maple Grove Estate. The property’s western exposure means the evening light comes through the tree line and falls across the grounds in a way that is genuinely stunning. Exact timing will shift depending on the time of year, but I’ll always help you nail down the best start time based on your session date.

Maple Grove Estate is one of the few venues that genuinely works year-round. Spring brings lush greenery and blooms throughout the grounds. Fall gives you warm tones and that crisp Tennessee light that does something really special to the place. Summer golden hours tend to run later in the evening, which means more flexibility with timing. I’m usually a warm-weather girl through and through, but even winter sessions here have this really quiet, elegant feel to them. There really is no right or wrong answer here.
Yes, and Maple Grove Estate’s open grounds make it one of the better venues around Knoxville for bringing your pup along. There’s plenty of room for them to move, which keeps the energy feeling relaxed rather than chaotic. If you’re planning to bring your dog to your engagement session, I’d recommend reading the tips above!

Lean toward classic, refined outfits in warm neutrals or earthy tones that will complement the property and work beautifully with golden hour light. Coordinate your looks without matching exactly, and when in doubt, err on the side of slightly more dressed up rather than casual. Maple Grove Estate has a certain elegance to it, and your outfits should feel like they belong there. Avoid busy patterns or very cool tones, both tend to fight with the warm light. Bringing a second outfit is always a good idea if you want more variety in your gallery.
Most engagement sessions run between one and two hours. For sessions at a venue like Maple Grove Estate, where there are multiple locations on the property to work through, two hours gives us room to move between spots, let moments breathe, and work through any outfit changes without feeling rushed. I’d rather have a little extra time and end on a high note than be watching the clock.

Every time I leave Maple Grove Estate, I’m already excited for the next wedding or session there. It’s one of those venues that just works — the light, the flow of the property, the character, all of it. If you’re getting married at Maple Grove Estate and you’re still looking for your photographer, I’d love to talk. I know how the light moves here, the spots that photograph beautifully, and how to make the whole experience feel relaxed. Send me a message and tell me everything about your day. Spare no details, I can’t wait to hear from you!
