One of my favorite reasons to have engagement photoshoots at the Knoxville Botanical Garden is just how many spots there are to take photos. The whole garden is spread over 44 acres and over two miles of historic stone walls. You’ve got manicured gardens, lush greenery, a rose garden (this one is iconic and a must-see!), wooded trails, open lawns, and so much more. They also have a few historic buildings, like the Howell House and Stone Greenhouse, that offer something different at every turn.

This kind of variety matters because it lets your gallery feel full without making us drive all over Knoxville chasing different looks. We can get something soft and romantic, something a little more editorial, something playful, and something quiet, all in one location. Love that for us.

The grounds are also free and open to the public every day from dawn to dusk, which makes it an easy yes for an engagement photoshoot. A little prep before your engagement photoshoot can make the whole experience feel so much easier. You do not need to turn the week before your session into a full production, but a few simple things can help you feel more relaxed, confident, stress-free, and present once we’re actually taking photos. Here’s what I recommend doing before your session so you can show up feeling like yourself, not like you just sprinted through your closet in a mild panic.

Schedule Hair & Beauty Appointments in Advance

Book your hair, facials, nails, and spray tan appointments at least a week before your session. You’ll want your hair to feel natural, not freshly cut or awkwardly short, with dye staining your neck and hairline. The same goes for any facials or spray tans. The last thing you want is to have an allergic reaction or too dark a tan and have to reschedule your photoshoot.

Basically, this is not the week to experiment wildly. I support a little glow-up moment, obviously, but maybe do not try a brand-new spray tan, facial, haircut, and brow lamination 24 hours before photos. We are aiming for confidence and freshness!

Prep Your Outfits Ahead of Time

Don’t leave outfit prep for the night before your session! Pull everything together a few days early, try everything on, and make sure it’s pressed and packed in a garment bag. If you’re wearing shoes that need to be broken in, start wearing them around the house a week or two before. Nothing slows down a session faster than shoes giving you blisters 10 minutes in.

Future you will be so grateful if you are not steaming a dress, hunting for earrings, and panic-texting your partner about socks thirty minutes before you need to leave.

Eat Something Before Your Session

This sounds obvious, but it gets skipped way more often than you’d think. Low blood sugar can make you tense, tired, irritable, and way less present during your engagement photoshoot. You do not need to eat a full Thanksgiving-level meal before your session, but please have something with protein and a little substance so you feel good while we’re walking around. A snack in the car is also never a bad idea. Hungry people do not feel romantic. They feel annoyed. I know that from experience, ask my toddler!

Hydrate, Especially in The Summer

This tip is applicable any time of year, but especially in the summer. Start drinking more water a day or two before your session, not just the morning of. Dehydration shows up in a variety of ways: fatigue, dizziness, dull skin, red eyes, chapped lips, just to name a few. Bring water, and we’ll keep it close. The garden has shade, but Tennessee heat can really throw a wrench in the party. Tennessee summer is not here to play, and I say that with love and a tiny bit of fear.

Leave Yourself Extra Time to Get Ready

Build in a buffer on the day of your session. If you’re rushing to get outfits ready and get out the door, you’re going to arrive stressed, and it takes time to shake that off. Give yourself at least 30 extra minutes to finish getting ready, add any finishing touches to your outfit, load the car, and make the drive without feeling like you’re already behind. Nothing kills the cute, relaxed, “we’re so in love” energy faster than sprinting out the door already sweating and slightly mad at each other.

What to Wear to Your Engagement Photoshoot at Knoxville Botanical Garden

Choosing what to wear for your engagement photoshoot does not need to send you into a spiral. You do not need to dress like a completely different person just because a camera is involved. If you never wear something in real life, your engagement session probably is not the time to force it. Elevated, yes. Unrecognizable, no.

Since Knoxville Botanical Garden has so much greenery, texture, and natural color, I always recommend choosing outfits that complement the setting instead of competing with it.

For the Ladies:

Lean into colors that complement the garden’s natural palette. Warm neutrals, muted tones, sage greens, dusty roses, and creamy whites all photograph really well here. I’d avoid super bright colors, tiny stripes, neon shades, or loud patterns that might pull attention away from your face.

Flowy dresses, linen sets, midi skirts, tailored pants, and soft textured fabrics all work really well in a garden setting. Anything with a little movement is especially pretty because it gives your photos some romantic movement, and movement is your best friend here. A dress that catches a little breeze, soft fabric, a skirt you can walk in, all of that gives us something to play with besides “stand here and smile,” which we are absolutely not doing for an hour and a half.

If you’re doing a second outfit, consider pairing something more dressed up with something more relaxed so you get variety in your final gallery. You could start with a dressier look, then switch into something that feels more casual and true to your everyday style.

As for shoes, the garden is mostly grass and gravel, so leave the stilettos at home. Block heels, wedges, sandals, or even a cute pair of boots are going to make your session so much more comfortable, and your photos will look better for it.

For the Men:

Classic and clean always win. A well-fitted button-down over trousers reads polished without looking overdressed for a garden setting. Coordinate with your partner’s outfit without being too matchy. If she’s wearing warm neutrals, you’re going to look great in an olive button-down and tan pants. Avoid busy patterns or logos. For shoes, loafers, clean white sneakers, or Chelsea boots, all work well on gravel and grass.

One of the best things about Knoxville Botanical Garden is that there really isn’t a bad time of year to visit, especially for an engagement photoshoot. Each season gives the garden a completely different feeling, from soft spring blooms to golden fall color to quiet winter textures. The best time for your session really depends on the look you love most, how much greenery you want, and how comfortable you feel in Tennessee weather.

Winter

Winter offers a quieter, more romantic feel at Knoxville Botanical Garden. With less dense foliage, the stone walls, garden structure, evergreen trees, and architectural details get to shine a little more. You’ll still find plenty of plant life throughout the season, including hollies with bright berries, evergreen shrubs, tall grasses, and winter-blooming camellias. There may not be as many flowers in bloom as there are in spring or summer, but the garden still has so much character during the colder months. It’s peaceful, less crowded, and perfect if you love a moodier, more minimal look for your engagement photos.

Spring

Spring is the popular girl for a reason. Everything is blooming, the colors are soft, and the garden feels like it woke up and decided to show off. Flowering bulbs, dogwoods, redbuds, azaleas, and fresh greenery make the garden feel soft, colorful, and full of movement. The light is really flattering this time of year, and the variety of blooms gives your photos so much depth without needing to overthink the location. If spring is your dream season, book early because it fills up fast. 

Summer

Summer at Knoxville Botanical Garden is lush, green, colorful, and full of life. The trees are full, the gardens feel vibrant, and the whole place has a warm glow that only happens in the summer. The biggest thing to plan around is the heat and humidity, because eastern Tennessee does not play around. For summer engagement photoshoots, I’d recommend scheduling your session during the last two hours before sunset so we get the best light and avoid the most intense part of the day. Fall

Fall is such a gorgeous time to visit Knoxville Botanical Garden because the color starts to shift into those warm reds, oranges, golds, and deeper burgundy tones. The cooler weather also makes it much easier to walk around the property, explore the trails, and take your time without fighting summer heat.
