Deciding where to get married in East Tennessee can seem pretty straightforward until you realize Knoxville, Sevierville, and Gatlinburg are all close enough to look like one big option on a map, but can give you VERY different wedding experiences once you start planning.
You can lean more into the city vibe and architecture, or head toward the Smoky Mountains and make that mountain destination feeling a bigger part of the entire weekend.
Hi! I’m Rachel, your East Tennessee wedding bestie with a camera, and I’ve spent years photographing weddings all over this little corner of Tennessee. I obviously love a gorgeous backdrop, but I’m always thinking about the parts that go beyond how a venue looks in photos, like how the day flows, where your people are staying, how much time everyone spends driving, and whether you get to enjoy the weekend you worked so hard to plan.
That’s why I’m breaking all of this down in a way that feels a little more helpful than staring at Google Maps and hoping the little pins decide for you.
So, if East Tennessee already has your heart but you’re still deciding where your people are all going to gather, let’s talk through Knoxville, Sevierville, and Gatlinburg.

If you’re figuring out where to get married, start by deciding how you want your wedding to feel for you and everyone coming to celebrate with you.
Knoxville is such a fun option if you love a little more city energy. You have gorgeous architecture, traditional hotels, amazing restaurants, and so many different venue styles to choose from, which gives you a lot of freedom.
Sevierville is where I’d look if you’re dreaming about Smoky Mountain views paired with a really beautiful venue experience. Some of my favorite luxury East Tennessee wedding venues are here, including The Trillium, and I love how you can get that destination feeling while still having a full vendor team and a space designed around hosting a wedding.
Gatlinburg is a great place if you want to be IN the Smokies. Your guests can stay in mountain cabins, spend time in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, head downtown for dinner, and make the whole weekend feel like a true mountain getaway.
All three can give you a completely different version of an East Tennessee wedding, so I’d start with the one that makes you most excited when you picture all of your people coming together.

A Knoxville wedding has such a different feeling from Sevierville or Gatlinburg, and I really love that about it. You still get all of that East Tennessee charm, but downtown streets, historic buildings, garden spaces, and estate grounds can each give your wedding a completely different look depending on what feels most like you.
I also love Knoxville for couples who want their guests to feel like everything is close and easy once they arrive. There are hotels, restaurants, rehearsal dinner spots, and after-party options all over the city, so your people have plenty around them before and after the wedding without you having to plan every second for them.
For photos, Knoxville gives me a lot to play with. We can use the architecture for something a little more editorial, find a softer garden setting, or keep things close to the venue so you’re not disappearing for a huge chunk of the day. I always want you to have beautiful portraits, but I also want you back with your people while the good candid moments are still happening.
Sevierville is where I’d look if the Smoky Mountain views are one of the biggest things you’re dreaming about for your wedding. This is where you can get those wide, dramatic mountain backdrops while still having the kind of full venue experience that keeps the day feeling intentional. Some of my favorite East Tennessee venues are here, and I LOVE how many of them show off the scenery instead of making you work around it.
I also love photographing weddings in Sevierville because the mountains can be such a huge part of your photos without taking over the entire day. We can step out for portraits with those insane views, catch the light as it changes, and still have plenty of time for you to get back to dinner, dancing, and everyone you came to celebrate with.
For your guests, Sevierville gives you that destination feeling too. There are cabins, hotels, restaurants, and plenty of Smoky Mountain spots nearby, so everyone can make a trip out of it while your wedding still feels like the center of everything.
What makes Gatlinburg feel different to me is how much the mountains become part of the wedding itself. You have wooded properties, mountain roads, fog rolling through, and scenery that can look completely different depending on the weather. I love how much variety that gives the day because the Smokies can feel soft and quiet one minute, then totally dramatic the next.
Gatlinburg might be somewhere you have to think through guest logistics a little more ahead of time. Your people may be staying in different parts of the area; some venues sit farther into the mountains, and getting everyone where they need to be can take a little more planning. That doesn’t have to make things stressful. I’d just want those pieces figured out early so you can focus on more of the fun parts of planning.

I’m big on thinking about your people when you choose your wedding location. You’re bringing all of these people you love together in one place, and you want them to be able to settle in and enjoy it right along with you.
Think about where most of your guests are traveling from, what accommodations will work for them, and whether anyone needs a little extra consideration getting around. Your grandparents might have a very different opinion about a winding mountain road than your college friends do.
You definitely don’t need to plan your entire wedding around everyone else, but I’d think about what happens once they arrive. Do they have somewhere comfortable to stay? Can they easily figure out where they’re going? Can your family be present with you instead of spending the morning solving little problems?
Those details matter because your people are such a huge part of what you’ll remember about the day.

This is one of my favorite questions because some couples really want the wedding to be the one event, while others want a few days where everyone gets to spend more casual time together.
Maybe you’re picturing a welcome dinner the night before, everyone hanging out together during the day, your wedding, and breakfast the next morning before people head home. That kind of experience can make Sevierville or Gatlinburg really fun because so many of your people are already treating the trip like a little getaway.
You might also love the idea of everyone arriving, celebrating HARD with you, and having plenty around them to enjoy on their own before heading home. Knoxville can make that feel really natural.

Transportation and lodging are two wedding details that can make a huge difference in how everyone experiences your wedding. Before you book somewhere, I’d look at where most of your guests are likely to stay and how far that puts them from the venue. Knoxville gives you lots of traditional hotel options close to restaurants and wedding spaces, while Sevierville and Gatlinburg can have your people spread between cabins and hotels throughout the mountains.
I’d also think about how everyone is getting home after the reception, especially if you’re serving alcohol or have a lot of guests traveling in. Shuttles can make things soooo much easier because everyone gets to celebrate with you without someone drawing the short straw and becoming the designated driver.
I have a whole guide to wedding guest transportation that goes deeper into shuttles, timelines, and what to plan for, so give that a read if you’re starting to figure out those logistics.
I want your guests excited about celebrating with you, not wondering whether their GPS is about to send them up the wrong mountain.

Once you choose where to get married in East Tennessee, get picky about the actual venue. I want you to think about how the space is going to feel when your favorite people are filling it, because that matters way more than how it looks empty in a perfectly staged Instagram post.
Look at the getting-ready spaces, what happens if Tennessee weather changes its mind, how everyone moves through the property, and whether there’s a venue team helping keep things moving behind the scenes. Does the rain plan still make you excited? Can your guests easily get from the ceremony to cocktail hour?
If you’re starting to narrow down your options, I put together a guide to some of my favorite full vendor team wedding venues so you can see what different venue experiences around the area can look like.
Those are the details I’d pay attention to because they’re the things you’re going to feel once the wedding day is here.

Your location ends up shaping your wedding photos in ways that go way beyond what’s sitting behind you in the frame. I’m paying attention to the light throughout the day, how easy it is to get to the spots we want to use, what the weather is doing, and how much time we’d have to spend away from your people to get there. That’s the stuff that can completely change how your photos feel.
I’m a sucker for a gorgeous view, obviously, but I’m never going to make you disappear for an hour just because there’s a pretty overlook somewhere down the road. Some of my favorite portraits happen when we can step outside for ten minutes, catch the light while it’s doing something ridiculous, and get you right back to the celebration.
Your location also helps set the tone for the whole gallery. Architecture can give us something a little more editorial, while mountain light and changing weather can make everything feel softer or more dramatic depending on the day. If you want to see how that looks in real weddings, you can take a peek through my portfolio to see how I photograph everything from Knoxville architecture to the Smoky Mountains.
That’s why I’m thinking about your photos while I’m also thinking about your experience. I want both to feel like you.

Where you should get married in East Tennessee really comes down to what you want the whole experience to feel like. Knoxville is such a good fit if you want city energy and easier guest logistics, while Sevierville gives you those BIG Smoky Mountain views with wedding venues built around hosting the entire day. Gatlinburg is where I’d look if you want the mountains to become an even bigger part of the weekend and love the idea of your people staying in cabins, exploring the Smokies, and turning your wedding into a little getaway.
To get a marriage license for an East Tennessee wedding, you’ll apply through a Tennessee county clerk’s office. If you’re getting married around Knoxville, you can start with the Knox County Clerk, and couples getting married around Sevierville or Gatlinburg can check with the Sevier County Clerk for current application requirements and fees. Tennessee requires the couple to review and sign the marriage license before leaving the clerk’s office, so this is one wedding errand you’ll want to plan time for together.
There isn’t one magic number for what a Knoxville wedding costs because your guest count, venue, and the experience you’re planning can change that number so quickly. A 100-person Knoxville wedding currently costs around $24,000 to $38,000 on average, which I’d use as a starting point instead of a rule for what you should spend.
Figure out what matters most to the two of you first, then build your budget around those priorities. I’d much rather see you spend intentionally on the parts you’re going to care about years from now than add something to the budget just because.
The best places for East Tennessee wedding photos depend a lot on the way you want your gallery to feel. Downtown Knoxville can give us architecture and a more editorial look, while heading toward Sevierville or Gatlinburg brings in mountain light, huge views, and all of the personality that comes with Smoky Mountain weather.
I recommend choosing a venue that already gives us plenty to work with so your wedding day doesn’t turn into a field trip for pretty photos. If we can sneak outside for ten minutes when the light is doing something ridiculous and then get you right back to your people, that’s pretty much my dream scenario.
For most East Tennessee weddings, McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) is going to be the easiest airport for guests flying in. It’s about 12 miles south of downtown Knoxville, less than an hour from Sevierville, and roughly an hour from Gatlinburg, which makes it a really convenient option whether your wedding is in the city or farther into the Smokies.
If you have a lot of people flying in, I’d keep the airport in mind when you’re choosing lodging too. Making it easy for everyone to get from the airport to wherever they’re staying is one of those tiny planning decisions that your out-of-town guests will appreciate.
Knoxville, Sevierville, and Gatlinburg look pretty close together on a map, but I wouldn’t treat them like they’re interchangeable when you’re planning a wedding. Sevierville is about 30 miles from Knoxville, which is usually around a 40 to 45-minute drive, and Gatlinburg is another 14 miles south of Sevierville, usually around 25 to 30 minutes farther. Knoxville to Gatlinburg is roughly 42 miles and about an hour under normal driving conditions.
That distance is exactly why I’m always thinking about where your guests are staying before we get too deep into the timeline. An hour doesn’t sound like much until your family is doing it before the ceremony, after the reception, or while trying to follow mountain roads somewhere their GPS SWEARS exists.

Once you’ve figured out where to get married in East Tennessee, everything else starts clicking into place more easily. You can start picturing your people there, the kind of wedding you want to have, and all of those little details that make it feel like yours instead of something you pulled straight from Pinterest.
That’s the stuff I love hearing about. I want to know which venue you keep going back to, what you’re most excited about, what your family is already talking about, and all of the random ideas currently living in your notes app. Those little pieces tell me so much about the wedding you’re creating and the people who are going to make it special.
