Benefits of Having Two Photographers on Your Wedding Day

Many couples ask why would they need a second photographer on their wedding day? My biggest reason is that it offers peace of mind. You have invested so much in your special day and we want everything to go as smoothly as possible. A second photographer provides additional coverage to capture all angles of your wedding day.

As your wedding photographer, I understand how important these moments are for you. I want to document your day to the best of my ability. Sometimes having my second there to help allows me to go above and beyond for my clients. My second shooter is a seasoned photographer who has worked with me for the last three years. He and I have an understanding when working together. He’s not only trustworthy, reliable but also a helping hand when needed. You deserve to have two talented wedding photographers on your wedding day, including a second photographer who complements my style.

What is a Second Photographer?

A second photographer is also referred to as a second shooter or assistant photographer. This is when an additional photographer is hired by the lead or primary photographer (aka me!) to assist during the wedding day. Having a second photographer ensures comprehensive coverage of your event.

A Second Photographer’s Role

A second photographer is beneficial in supporting the lead photographer and adding to photography coverage. A second will work alongside the lead to capture different angles and perspectives. They also help with lighting, assist during posing, and document candid moments. A second photographer can be especially helpful when it comes to larger wedding parties or weddings with multiple locations. If you are a couple wanting extensive wedding day coverage, a second photographer would be the best add-on. This ensures that you have two photographers in different locations during cocktail hour and the reception, enhancing the depth of your wedding portfolio.

A Second Photographer Helps Me

Being a full-time wedding photographer is a highly important role that I don’t take lightly. I want the absolute best for my clients. However, wedding days are long and can be taxing, typically lasting 8-12 hours. I am constantly moving, climbing stairs multiple times a day, and walking miles. This usually takes place in all kinds of weather. It ranges from the hottest and most humid days to the super freezing nights. Having a second photographer that I trust is simply a breath of fresh air. A friend and someone I can confide in is honestly so helpful in making sure every detail gets captured.

A Professional Accomplice

I stated before my second is someone I’ve worked with for years. This means he knows to anticipate my moves, he knows exactly what is expected and what he should capture. If I need to bounce an idea off of him he provides feedback and sometimes a fresh perspective. My second is also a helping hand. I LOVE those epic veil shots. My second photographer can lend a literal helping hand. He can hold the veil in ways that allow me to be creative and get the best shot! When it comes to family photos I can send him to grab a stray family member. I also love to check in with my bride and groom. If she forgets her bouquet, I can ask him to grab it for me.

The Best Back Up

I never miss a wedding day. It would take an act of God for me not to show up for my clients. However, life happens. It’s always great knowing I have a second on hand who knows me and my business well enough. If I had to leave it in his hands, I can trust him with my business, making the choice to have a second photographer even more valuable.

My second is also the best at understanding this. If I’m up front capturing you walking down the aisle, he’s running to the back. He gets the perspective of the bride and her father walking down the aisle from behind. He also documents the parent’s reactions during the ceremony and reception. It’s these raw moments that I want my couple to relive when they receive their full wedding gallery. Having a second photographer ensures these special, candid moments are captured without missing a beat.
