Find Your Dream Photographer

Choosing the right photographer is like finding the perfect wedding dress—it just feels right. Look for someone whose style makes your heart skip a beat (light & airy, moody, classic, true tone, etc.). Be sure to check out their portfolio and reviews to make sure they’re the real deal. You can also ask to see galleries from all weather types. This way you can see how they handle all lighting situations. Not just the gorgeous highlight photos posted they post on Instagram. Chat with them ahead of time and share your vision. I love talking with my couples before booking. This way we’re comfortable with each other before getting in front of the camera.

Pick a Spot That Speaks to Your Love Story

Location, location, location! It sets the stage for your love story. Many clients ask me where they should take their photos and I usually recommend choosing a place that’s meaningful. For example where you had your first date, a favorite coffee shop, or that dream travel destination. My next question is what speaks to you as a couple? Do you love nature? Go for a beach, forest, or mountain vibe. City lovers? Pick a cool urban backdrop. Lastly, if you’re wedding is in the city, go to the mountains for your engagement session. This way you can have both backdrops.

A small note to ask your photographer if they’re familiar with the area. This way they can plan for lighting, accessibility, and whether you need a permit to shoot there.

Dress to Impress (But Stay Comfortable!)

What you wear matters—but so does feeling amazing. Coordinate outfits with your partner. You don’t have go full-on twinsies. Complimenting each other works best! Stick to solid, neutral, or pastel tones—bold prints can steal the spotlight (unless you want too). My engagement sessions usually include two outfits. Who doesn’t love a wardrobe change? I usually recommend one casual outfit and one fancy. We’ll start with the casual outfit and save the fancy fit so sunset! At the end of the day wear clothes that make you feel confident, comfy, and totally you!

Time It Just Right

The right lighting = dreamy photos! I think everyone has heard the term GOLDEN HOUR. Of course it is literal perfection when you shoot in the most perfect lighting. Golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) gives you that soft, romantic glow. I recommend avoiding harsh midday sun unless you’re embracing direct sunlight then go for it! As your wedding/ engagement photographer, I’ll help you plan all these things and give you the best insight for timing!

Add a Personal Touch

Make your photos uniquely you with personal elements! This is totally optional but you can always bring your fur babies to a session with me! I love meeting your doggies! Bring props like your favorite books or a picnic set up for a more styled session. Incorporate hobbies you love as a couple—think biking, music, or even coffee dates. Theme it up! Whether it’s cozy winter vibes or a vintage-inspired shoot, go all out. I am always down for something outside the box!

Keep Hair & Makeup Natural (But Camera-Ready!)

You want to look amazing, but still you. This is totally optional. If you have a hair & makeup trial with your beauty artist, you can try to coordinate these dates. This way, it’s done for your engagement session! PSA to grooms, a fresh haircut a few days before the shoot keeps things crisp (NOT THE DAY OF).

Plan for the Unexpected

Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate, so I have a backup plan. As your engagement photographer I keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your photo shoot. Usually my go to is to reschedule or find a cozy place indoors just in case. Sometimes we learn to embrace the unexpected and play in the rain. Rainy photos can be so romantic!

Communicate & Trust Your Photographer

A little planning goes a long way! Share your ideas, must-have shots, and any special requests. Show me that Pinterest board! It’s okay if you’re nervous. I’m here to guide you and make it fun! My specialty is making my clients feel at ease in front of the camera. And of course, the more awkward the better!

Pop the Champagne!

Your engagement photos will be treasured forever, so make the experience fun, relaxed, and totally you! With the right planning and the perfect photographer, you’ll walk away with stunning photos that capture the love and excitement leading up to your big day.
